Designed with Simplicity—Made with Soul

My need to create with my hands roots and motivates my work. I have never been good at sitting still. I find great satisfaction in tangible outcomes. The creative process is a grounding practice in my life–one that excites and calms me. I am in love with the idea that a lump of clay, a material once part of the earth, when formed and manipulated, becomes a beautiful and functional ceramic object.

When making pots I am driven by the pursuit of the “compelling pot.” A successful pot is timeless in its aura.  The skill it takes to make a pot that is functional, visually pleasing and finely honed is both a humbling and rewarding endeavor.  Making pots requires focus–a constant assessment of the elements; form, line, weight, shape, color. I never tire of that challenge.

Though mostly self-taught, I am blessed to have worked with some master potters. I feel a sense of obligation to pay homage to those that taught me–generously sharing their knowledge and expertise with great passion and warmth.  Their words and encouragement continue to inspire me in the studio.

It is important to me that my pots express the voice of the maker. Like a good writer uses words, clay becomes a medium of expression. Clay can document and intertwine the influences of my life.  Pulling in texture, pattern, elements in nature, glaze choice and line are ways that I enjoy giving pots expression.

Lastly, my pursuit of this craft is driven by the belief that handmade objects add a richness to our lives. They have a quality of calm and slowness, crucial in our fast-paced world. Pots, in particular, are a conduit for intentional living and community. They grace our dinner tables and kitchens and provide a connection to humanity.

In the end, it is my hope that my pots add beauty and a sense of rhythm to the rituals of everyday living.
